Pp. 325. ISBN 0-465-05236-6. **Abstract.**In this paper, we present an axiomatic characterization of discrete operators. In particular, we demonstrate that our analysis clarifies the distinction between uniform and nonuniform discrete operators. We also show how operator theory can be used to analyze discrete dynamical systems. Introduction ============ Discrete dynamical systems, originating in the ancient Greek work of Euclid, have been studied for over two thousand years (see [@Gillies]). In this framework, the evolution of the system is described by means of a time-dependent function of a real or complex variable (the state) which maps the system to a subset of its state space (the phase space). Discrete systems have been extensively used as models in scientific areas including robotics, image processing, control and optimization, and often appear in physics, computer science, biology, economics, and even linguistics. In the case of real state variables, discrete operators have been widely used in the analysis of nonlinear systems (see [@HL1], [@SL5], [@SL6] and [@T]). An operator is said to be uniform if it maps a set of discrete points into a set of discrete points. The aim of this paper is to study the space of uniform discrete operators and to show how operator theory can be used to analyze discrete dynamical systems. Discrete operators, as well as other mathematical structures such as graphs, have been thoroughly studied by the mathematical community and also recently by the computer science community (see for instance [@AJT1], [@AJT2], [@AJT3], [@BJT], [@HL2], [@HL4], [@M], [@SL8], [@SL4], [@SL7], [@SL5], [@SL6], [@T1], [@T2], [@V] and [@YZ]). This paper presents a new analysis of the theory of discrete operators. It will be shown how operator theory clarifies the distinction between discrete operators that are uniform and those that are not. The theory also applies to the more general study of the transfer functions of discrete systems (see [@CMS]). We present an analysis that clarifies the difference between discrete operators with a finite number of outputs and those with an infinite number of outputs. In particular, it will be shown that the notion
